My main area of research interest is the effect of induced changes in body temperature on clinical patient-centred outcomes after acute brain injury and systemic inflammation/sepsis; this work is supported National Health and Medical Research Council Funding in Australia. I have received over $8.5 Million in research funding and published over 40 scientific manuscripts.
My PhD focused on traumatic brain injury and involved a series of observational studies, surveys and interventional studies with the aim of understanding the feasibility of conducting an international clinical trial of pyrexia control, and informing the design of such a study. Through parallel avenues of research our group has collaborated with international colleagues in clinical trials evaluating temperature control in cardiac arrest (Niklas Nielsen, Sweden) and in critically ill patients with infections (Paul Young, New Zealand). Other research interests include fluid management, early mobilization and long-term outcomes after critical illness.
I am the current Treasurer for the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group and an Examiner for the College of Intensive Care Medicine.
